There are Pro's and Con's of receiving treatment through Cash-Based services.
PROS: - Referrals and authorizations are not required, resulting in quicker appointment time. Some insurances require an authorization or referral for behavioral/mental health services to be a "medical necessity." Review and processing of referrals and authorizations may delay treatment. - Diagnosis of a mental illness is not required. Insurance companies typically only cover services declared as medical necessity. Many people seek mental health treatment for reasons not defined by a specific mental health disorder. - More privacy and confidentiality. Any details and private information that your therapist, psychiatrist, or other specialist has, won't be required or known to the insurance company. - Pre-existing condition. Documented mental health treatment filed through your insurance will go on your permanent record. In the future this could potentially affect cost of your insurance or prevent you from getting coverage altogether. This is a major factor when thinking long-term.
CONS: - Higher costs for prescribed medication. - Insurances have competitive rates that may be financially beneficial depending on the the services you require and how often. These rates may be better than paying cash rate, dependent on each person's scenario. - Paying full straight cash may be more expensive than seeing an In-network medical provider. If you have insurance, factors such as the deductible, co-insurance, and out of pocket maximum can still affect your portion of the cost.
